Search engine optimization commonly abbreviated as SEO is a process of optimizing websites or WebPages for search engines so, that the website or WebPages appear in top search results for your desired keywords. SEO is commonly divided in 2 parts on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

If you write your content and take care of all the necessary on-page optimization than with just few quality back links, you can rank your website higher in Google and other search engines depending on the competitiveness of your keywords. There are also different handy tools available with different browser such as SEO quake that is available with Firefox and helps in analyzing different SEO factors.

Most webmaster divide keywords into two categories, Competitive Keywords and the other are Long Tail Key words. Long tail keyword is a keyword that is a combination of 2 or 3 words. In case of long tails keywords the webpage can get higher ranking with just few back links as there are less competing pages for the long tail keywords in Google. However, to rank website for a competitive keyword requires lots of high quality back links from authority sites as there are hundreds or even thousands of competitors for the same keyword.

To analyze the competition of any keyword, simply type the keyword in quotes in Google and you will be able to find the number of competing pages for that particular keyword in Google.  From business point of view its better to target long tail keywords as people normally use long tail keywords in search engines to find solution to their problems.  For instance, if your website is related to SEO, than targeting long tail key word such as “How to optimize your website “is much better than targeting a keyword “SEO” as there are less competing pages in Google for long tail keywords.

If you have a new website than from SEO point of view targeting long tail keywords is much effective as you will be able to obtain higher rankings in Google for many of your long tail keywords with in 1 or 2 months with only few quality back links. Higher ranking in Google means free targeted traffic and free target traffic means a lot of sales.
