Although the vast majority of websites out there will use some sort of SEO plugins, such as Yoast, All in One SEO Tool, or Rank Math, to help them improve the search engine optimization of an article. However, just because you get a ‘green light’ does not necessarily mean the SEO of your article is as high as it can be, or that article is going to gain traffic. Taking this into consideration, here are a few pointers to add when creating articles online, to maximize its exposure.

Research Ideas First

If you decided you were going to make an article on, say, symptoms of the common cold, you will not be surprised that you are going to be an incredible amount of competition for such a search phrase. You have huge health organizations and very well recognized health websites that will rank high. On top of this, there will be many many websites all with the same idea, which is only going to make it harder to gain traffic, no matter how good the SEO of the article is.

For this reason, it is always a wise idea to research your article idea first. You can do this using the Google itself, and seeing the hover search terms that appear or, better yet, the likes of AHREF, Moz or SEMRush. Tools such as the Keyword Magic Tool allows you to see what people search for, how popular the search term is, and the level of competition for the search phrase. With this, you can then maximize your potential of the article by going for high traffic/low competition search phrases.

Add an Image

Adding an image is always a great idea for articles. Not only does it expand the article into Google image search, it can also improve the chances of the having the article appear as a rich snippet.

Images are also great ways of increasing the engagement level web users have with the article. With an increased engagement level, the time on page increases, sending a positive signal to Google that the article is what the web user was looking for, helping to improve the article’s organic ranking.

1,000+ Words Minimum

The length of the content plays a big role in the SEO of the article. The shorter the article, the less content for Google to process. Less content also is more difficult to go into detail with, so the ‘usefulness’ decreases as content length decreases.

As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to have all of your content at least 1,000+ words. From experience of running a few content mills, a good number is between 1,500-2,000 words per article in the long run.
