If you are interested in seriously optimizing your website to gain as much traffic as possible, organically, then one of the first places you should look for is SEMRush. There are also other competitors that offer just as good a service, such as Ahrefs, Moz, or even UberSuggest.

Saying this, SEMRush can be quite daunting at first if you have never used a tool with as much data as SEMRush has on hand. For this reason, here are a few ways you can utilize the power of SEMRush, to increase your SEO traffic as much as possible.

#1 Understand Your Website in Domain Overview and Organic Research

The first place I always go to in SEMRush is the domain overview and organic research of my website. This is because:

  • It gives me a high-level look as to how my website is doing
    • If I see there has been a drop in traffic, I first look to the domain overview to see if that was caused by an SEO drop. If it isn’t, then I can safely say it was potentially just a natural temporary drop.
  •  Organic research shows the top keywords and the daily and monthly position changes of the website. This, again, is another great way to see how the website is doing, as it:
    • Helps to identify if the website is naturally growing or declining
    • If there are increase or decreases in rankings, it could be on specific articles, which you can then look into why this is happening and learn from it.

#2 Analyze Competitor Top Keywords

Using the same tools as outlined in #1, do exactly the same thing with your competitors. This is incredibly useful as it is giving you insights into why your competitors are doing so well. With this:

  • See if there are any keywords that your competitors rank for highly, that you currently have no content to rank for <– these are your biggest winners
  • Are your competitors naturally growing or declining? If so, why? (and learn from this):
    • Is the core web vitals of the website strong?
    • Is the theme of the competitor good and promotes good UX?
    • Is the domain authority strong, if so why?

#3 Use Keyword Magic Tool for New Ideas

The keyword magic tool allows you to research any keyword you want, to understand what keywords are worth creating content for, and what ideas are not.

For example, you might really like to make vegan recipes. However, what vegan recipe should you spend time on? This is where the keyword magic tool helps you to determine what recipe to write content for, that will bring you the most traffic.

This works by analyzing both the keyword volume (searches/month) and the keyword difficulty (where the lower this number is, the easier it will be to rank for it).

#4 Site Audit

The site audit is something everything should use. Similar to Screaming Frog, the SEMRush site audit crawls through your entire website and shows any issues that occur from the crawl, both in terms of UX, and SEO. There, you then get recommendations to fix these.

#5 Position Tracking

If you have made changes to content, to see if it helps improve its rankings, wouldn’t it be a good idea to track such an article, to see if the changes made a positive/negative effect? This is what position tracking does.

As much as how to do SEO is publicized all over the internet, the SEO of one website could be different from another. Position tracking allows you to make changes to your content, almost like experimenting, to see what works best for your site’s SEO.
