For the vast majority of people out there that are looking to create a website, I can be my horses that
most people will look to creating a website by themselves. This is mainly because 1) it is the cheapest way to go about making a website especially if you have a small budget and 2) who are you going to employ that you can afford and trust?
However, as websites grow, many website owners tend to still try to maintain the website by themselves, generally because they have been fine up to now so why would they need to outsource any work to others? I was exactly like this with AskWillOnline.com, RestoringMamods.com and even PoemAnalysis.com.
Yes, for AskWillOnline.com and RestoringMamdods.com, I still run them individually since the up-keep time for these websites is not much at all. However, for PoemAnalysis.com, things are definately different. The time I need to maintain it is creeping more and more every week. For this reason, I decided a few months ago that, at the time, it was a better time than ever to finally create a ‘proper’ team (excluding freelancers) to help run the website. As of now, the implementation of the team is still ongoing. However, from this, I have found that implementing a team to help run a website has an abudance of benefits.
#1 Delegate Tedious Tasks to Others
This sounds bad at first. However, a lot of the work I was doing involved, what can be deemed now, repetitive tedious tasks that I could easily teach people to do instead to free up my time. Therefore, the first thing you have to ask yourself if you are unsure whether you need a team is ‘are the tasks I am doing now easy enough for others to do it instead of me?’ – if the answer is yes, then you should employ someone to do the task.
I say this because, at the end of the day, how much is your time worth? As an entrepreneur and a website owner, it is probably worth a lot more than you think – is your time best spent doing tedious tasks for hours or employing someone to do that instead freeing you up to do more important tasks? I would say so.
#2 Your Team will Contribute Great Ideas
Of course, it depends on who you employ. I have some people work for me that simply just do the work and that is it. Nothing more and nothing less. As much as this is great, there is a part of me that wants a team that are willing to contribute ideas to improving the website since if the website improves and makes more money, then they are likely to get more work.
With this, I would almost say it is worth employing someone at a higher hourly rate who is going to contribute creativity and ideas to your team than someone cheaper who will just do the work.
For example, for one of my websites, I had some of the best ideas come from my team, such as maintaining the team using Trello lists, getting social media marketing ideas for certain websites and theme improvement ideas.
