Passive income is the goal of most people – the ability to put in work and then reap the benefits for years and years to come. This is why websites and the online world is so attractive. For many business models, once you put in the effort, you will see the financial benefits of this for a very long time.

However, I feel that saying you can gain a passive income on the online world is a bit of a false accusation. No matter what type of website you are going to make, there is always going to be upkeep time and time dedicated to maintaining it. Looking at a standard content-mill website or blog, here are 5 things every website owner needs to maintain, to make sure the website is running as smoothly and effectively as possible.

#1 Moderate and Reply to Comments

If your website has good quality content on it, then it is very likely you are going to get comments on it. Comments are great, as they are a way for your audience to interact with you and your content, as well as contribute to good SEO (the more comments on an article, the more it appears the article helped people).

When you get comments on articles, you should always address them and respond back – blogging is a two way street and replying to comments is a great way to keep an audience, as well as create relationships between you and your audience.

#2 Update Plugins

If you use the likes of WordPress, then you are sure to have plugins on your website. Over time, these plugins get updated to make them more secure, robust and work with the latest and greatest version of WordPress. If you do not update these, then you are putting your website at risk of crashing or worse, being open to a security flaw.

#3 Update any Security

Security is of utmost importance for websites. For this reason, you should always keep this up to date, no matter what. There are always flaws in security that can potentially allow hackers into a website. Making sure you update this with whatever security system you use will help patch up these holes to make your website less penetrable.

#4 Review Content

It is important to review content every so often to maintain high quality content on your website. Maybe a comment suggested your content wasn’t that good and you actually needed to improve it? Maybe the traffic to an article should be higher, in your opinion? Whatever the reasoning, it is always a good idea to re-review content of the past.

#5 Analyse Statistics

Making sure you know how your website is performing is key to its success. It allows you to see any potential problems before they arise, so you can mitigate risk or deal with the problem well in advanced. For example, if one of your articles was flagged up as copyright infringement, addressing it within 24 hours will do your website a whole load of SEO good rather than leaving the content up online for months on end.
