What’s in a name?… everything! The domain name of your web site or business in one quick word, explains what your business is all about. Sure, many companies may have created their own words for their web site and businesses, like Twitter, Facebook, Microsoft, eBay and many more, but more generic keywords and search terms are where the money is at, especially when they are in dot com form.

Below is a list of the top five domain sales of all time, and who paid how much for them, and what service was used for the sale. Imagine going back in time to the late 90s and being able to secure some of these domain names for just a few dollars!

Sex.com – $13,000,000

Is there any one three letter word out there that could demand as much money as SEX.com? The adult industry makes a massive amount of money, so seeing Sex.com as the highest domain name sale of all time makes sense.  The domain was purchased by Clover Holding Limited in 2010 through Sedo.com. When will we see another domain name break the 8 figure barrier?

Fund.com – $9,999,950

Too bad the sale of Fund.com didn’t go for an extra $50 more and break that 8 figure barrier. I’m sure this private sale through Gentile/Philip in 2008 will stay at the top of the domain sales list for quite a while. After buying a domain name for nearly $10 million dollars, you would hope that their web site was ranked better than 989,451 on Alexa!

Porn.com – $950,000

Just like SEX.com, PORN.com is a huge name that we would expect to see at the top of the list. Just missing that 8 figure barrier by a small $50,000, PORN.com still makes it in the top three domain sales of all time. The domain was purchased through Moniker Privacy Services in 2007.

FB.com – $8,500,000

Who would have thought a simple two letter word like “FB” would sell for so much money. Thanks to the introduction and success of Facebook.com, the previous owner of FB.com is now sitting pretty!  Facebook, Inc acquired the FB.com domain in 2010 through MarkMonitor, Inc.

Diamond.com – $7,500,00

Lastly, to end the list of the top five domain sales of all time, we have Diamond.com. The sale of Diamond.com was a private one through Network Solutions, LLC and was all the way back in 2006. The web site at Diamond.com is currently ranked 133k on Alexa and is online store for buying and selling of diamonds.

More Killer Domains that Have Sold or Millions

You might be thinking to yourself “what about the huge mega million and even billion dollar deals I have seen and heard about?”…, well the list above is only made up of sales for just “domain names”, which means they don’t have established web sites or businesses associated with them. If you’d like to see a list of even more domain names that sold for millions, be sure to check out my affiliate marketing blog, and for an updated and long list of domain names that have sold over the years.
